The Executive Committee on Food Safety and Nutrition Starts its Work

The first meeting of the Executive Committee on Food Safety and Nutrition was held today at the Sepidar Palace, where Deputy Ministers, representatives from the international organizations and foreign countries were attended.

At the meeting, discussions made on working committees, duties and responsibilities, work plan and the relevant government Ministries’ plans in various areas to implement Afghanistan Food Security and Nutrition Agenda (AFSeN).

First, Nasrallah Arsalayi, head of the secretariats of the Council of Ministers called Afghanistan Food Security and Nutrition Agenda critical and said that malnutrition is a serious challenge for the public health, especially for the health of the children.

Mr. Arsalayi, while stressing on the National Unity Government’s commitment, stated that reducing malnutrition and food security requires joint work among the Afghan government, the United Nations and the international community.

The head of the secretariats of the Council of Ministers added, “At the late meeting of the Council of Ministers, we presented the national agenda.”

Dr. Abdullah directed government departments to prepare their plans in accordance with Afghanistan Food Security and Nutrition Agenda (AFSeN), and to seriously cooperate with them.

According to statistics provided by the Executive Committee on Food Safety and Nutrition, currently 33% of citizens do not have access to safe food, 39% live below the poverty line, and this situation affects the growth of over two million children.

In this program, Deputy Ministers of Health, Women's Affairs, Information and Culture, Higher Education, Agriculture, and other government-related agencies put forward their plans in connection with Afghanistan Food Security and Nutrition Agenda.

Representatives from the international organizations, especially the United Nations also expressed their support and cooperation with the technical section of the Committee for implementation of Afghanistan Food Security and Nutrition Agenda.

The Committee is working for the citizens to have access to safe food, healthy diet, reduction of malnutrition and appropriate food consumption, and the Executive Committee on Food Safety under presiding of Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan monitor its work.
