Leaders of the National Unity Government met with Mike Pence, Vice President of the United States

Leaders of the National Unity Government, His Excellency President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and his Excellency Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive met with Mike Pence, Vice President of the United States at the Presidential Palace.

At the meeting, the leaders of the National Unity Government welcomed Mr. Pence and his accompanying delegation to Afghanistan and appreciated the presence and contributions of the United States in Afghanistan.

Thanking the Government of Afghanistan for its warm welcome and appreciating achievements of the Afghan government and the people in recent years, Vice President of the United States assured of the continued presence and support of the United States to Afghanistan.

At the meeting, the leadership of the National Unity Government presented a clear picture of achievements, opportunities and challenges in Afghanistan, and highlighted the achievements of the National Unity Government in providing security, reform, anti-corruption and regional cooperation.

Welcoming and supporting the new US strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia, the leaders of the National Unity Government called this strategy a concrete step towards combating terrorism and ensuring stability in Afghanistan and in the region, as well as a foreground for regional development and cooperation.

The leaders of the National Unity Government considered destruction of terrorist bases and sanctuaries and cooperation of the regional countries as a fundamental condition for the abolition of terrorism, and called for practical measures in this regard.

The leaders of the National Unity Government stressed on holding elections and bringing necessary reforms in this area, and called for strengthening and expansion of cooperation between the United States and Afghanistan.

The US Vice President praised achievements of the Afghan Armed Forces and their sacrifices in anti-terrorism as well as progress and achievements of the National Unity Government in other areas, and emphasized on the continued cooperation of his country in the light of the new strategy for fighting terrorism and destruction of terrorist sanctuaries.

Supporting electoral reforms, Mr. Pence stressed on the principle of holding transparent, widespread and valid elections in Afghanistan.

The US Vice President, in his talk with US troops in Afghanistan on the eve of the Celebration of Christmas and the New Year, expressed his country's support for Afghanistan in anti-terrorism and defense of freedom and security, urging Pakistan to work for fighting against terrorism and eradication of terrorist sanctuaries.
