Commencement of Voter’s Registration is an Important Step for Holding a Valid Election

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan met with Mr. Cornelius Zimmermann, NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan in his office at the Sepidar Palace.

Mr. Zimmermann welcomed commencement of voter registration for parliamentary and presidential elections in Afghanistan, calling that an important step in holding a transparent and valid election in Afghanistan. Mr. Zimmermann considered holding a transparent, nationwide and valid election important for democratic process and stability in Afghanistan.

Appreciating NATO’s presence and its constant contribution to Afghanistan, the Chief Executive called election as the basis for legitimacy of the system and political stability in Afghanistan, and considered commencement of voter registration as an important step to implement one of the commitments of the National Unity Government for holding a transparent and a valid election.

Security situation, NATO’s assistance to Afghanistan, relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan, peace process and the ways to achieve peace in Afghanistan were discussed at the meeting. The NATO civilian representative announced his support to the Afghan government's peace plan, calling it a practical and realistic step to achieve peace in Afghanistan.
