The Leaders of the National Unity Government met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

At the meeting, held at the Green House Palace of ARG, both sides discussed on United States' assistance and cooperation in various fields with Afghanistan, regional cooperation, fighting against terrorism, funding and equipping security and defense forces, process of peace led and owned by Afghans, elections and how to implement the United States’ strategy on Afghanistan and South Asia.

Welcoming the US Secretary of State and his delegation, President Ghani said that new US strategy had made a positive change in the region, and that regional countries should be honest in their responsibility for this strategy. President Ghani added that the goal of this strategy is to create conditions for achieving lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan and in the region that the National Unity Government is committed to that.

At the meeting, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive of the country, also welcomed the US Secretary of State and thanked the US for its support from Afghanistan in various fields.

Stating that relations of both countries are at the top level at the present time, the Chief Executive said that continued support of the United States from the Afghan government and people would be important in fighting against terrorism. The Chief Executive called the US strategy on Afghanistan and South Asia effective.

Then, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo praised courage and dedication of the Afghan security and defense forces, as well as victims of his country's forces, saying that now, more than any other time, the United States is a partner with the people of Afghanistan.

He assessed the US strategy on Afghanistan and South Asia positive for ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan and in the region, saying that they are working with the Afghan government and security forces to create secure and stable circumstances in the country.

While supporting the peace process led and owned by Afghans, the US Secretary of State said many of the Taliban realized that they could not succeed through military way, and this issue is deeply concerned with President Trump's strategy and the Taliban response to the ceasefire announced by President Ghani.

Mike Pompeo said the United States is committed to continuing its contributions to Afghanistan in various fields, especially the peace process, as well as funding and equipping Afghan security and defense forces.
